What is the difference between M365 Calling Plans and Teams Direct Routing?
M365 Calling Plans are out-of-the-box carrier plans purchased directly from Microsoft. Direct Routing, on the other hand, allows you to connect your existing local telecom providers (like Singtel, StarHub, etc.) directly into Microsoft Teams using a Session Border Controller (SBC). Direct Routing is generally much more cost-effective for larger numbers of users and allows you to keep your existing phone numbers and contracts.
Do I need physical on-premise hardware or servers to run Direct Routing?
No. Because this is configured as a fully cloud-based solution, you do not need to buy or maintain physical servers or local on-premise PBX hardware. The connection between your telco line and Microsoft Teams is handled through secure cloud-hosted routing, keeping your overhead virtually zero.
Is Direct Voice Routing secure?
Yes. All traffic uses highly secure TLS-encrypted connections directly into Microsoft Teams endpoints. Everything is managed natively within Microsoft Teams, so you do not need any additional applications or separate software to make or receive telephone calls.
